Walnut Cake from the Greek Festival

The Greek Festival is underway in Portland and though we occasionally try something new, we find it hard to pass on our favorites: gyros, dolmathes, and for dessert, loukoumades and walnut cake. The festival is a fundraiser for the Greek church and members of the church do all the cooking . . . a delicious tradition!

Series Two Baseball Cards
Sure, I know there are nine innings to a game, three outs to an inning, and most of the words to "Take Me Out to The Ballgame," but it would be three strikes YOU'RE OUT! out if asked about baseball cards and collectibles. Not to worry, Paul Kane at Don's Sports Cards knows just about all you need to know.

I spoke with Paul this morning for a story in our upcoming Collection Issue . . .
2015 Series Two Baseball Cards arrived while I was at the shop.

Beet Greens at Farmers Market

Fresh, unblemished greens with just the tiniest beets. Oh, they are so good. Steamed and dressed with olive oil and salt and pepper. That's how we like them. I've seen recipes that call for a drizzle of vinegar and some that add a bit of salt pork to the pan for added flavor. How do you like your beets?

Visit your local market and try something fresh, something you're unfamiliar with, something locally grown. It's the healthiest, most delicious way to eat. And it is, afterall, country cooking month!

Today is Corn on the Cob Day!  It's no wonder June is country cooking month. We had corn on the cob last week and cooked more than we could eat in one sitting. I cut the corn off the cob and was surprised by at how much one cob yielded: one medium cob yields about 3/4 cup. Stored in the refrigerator, it was good cold (the best ever snack food!), and reheated as a side dish.
