The Comfort of Soup

Years ago a friend asked a favor. Her mother was not well, wasn't eating, and my friend thought if there was anything that she might go for it would be her own chicken soup. "Would you make my mother's recipe?" she asked.

Of course.

Phone in one hand, pencil in the other, I scribbled notes on a slip of paper (shown here). Though nothing like any chicken soup I'd ever had or made (no carrots, no celery, no onion), it's one of my favorite recipes.

Served with grated Parmesan cheese, it is deliciously comforting.
